About Hollow-State Designs
As it says on the home page, Hollow-State Designs is all about the Art and Science of Building with Thermatrons. This site and the products in it is about using thermatrons where there is no need to be practical or state of the art: amateur radio and related radio experimenting where the prime motivating factor is to have fun with technology, new or old. Over the past decade there has been a real resurgence of interest in experimenting with old crystal radio designs, restoring old radios and “boatanchors”, and building things with thermatrons. I think the ‘why’ here is partly because solid-state equipment has either gotten too complicated, particularly to work on, or too appliance like.
This site and the products on it were created by Grayson Evans, KJ7UM. He was first licensed as WN4GVM in 1962 (yes, that old). He has spent much of his life in electronic product development, and operating a video production company. He got interested in restoring old thermatron amateur radio equipment in the early 1990’s and has been doing it and teaching it ever since.
He is also the author of two books in the home automation field and hundreds of industry magazine articles including numerous articles for Electric Radio magazine on thermatron related topics.
He has a Bachelor in Architecture, and Masters Degree in Computer Science from Georgia Tech. He currently lives with his family in Jupiter, Florida where he is trying to enjoy semi-retirement, homebrewing, and making thermatron educational videos.
